What Tech Companies think of Makers Academy – Dr Laurie Young, Head of Operations, New Bamboo

I’m Laurie Young and I’m head of operations here at New Bamboo and we’re a web app development agency. New Bamboo is the the top rails agency
in London so when we first heard from from you about
Neil you said “Hey we’ve got a guy we think you should interview” and we thought well, he’s only got 3 months experience – and that’s learning experience, it’s not
actual experience typically we’re looking for people with
five-plus years commercial experience but we thought well we can give him a a
mock interview – this gives us more knowledge about the
marketplace, it gives us knowledge about what’s coming out of Makers Academy and obviously it’s good for him to have some interview experience with an agency like us and so we sent him the first stage of our interview process which is a technical test – it’s fairly short, but it’s reasonably complex and he came back with a response to that and we looked into it and thought, well actually this is really good – it was,
at that time probably the best we’d seen and so we invited him in for an in-person interview and it was really clear that we had to hire this guy. Our experience working with Neil has been really positive – he’s really got to grips with the coding side of things but he’s also really got to grips with
some of the business problems that our clients come to us with we have a whole range of different
clients who have a variety of different business problems coming
to us with anything from e-commerce to try and create engagement to trying to get a better understanding of their
customers. Whatever it is he’s been able to not just quickly understand what the
problem is but also come up with some really direct and
insightful questions to help explore the issue and get that really deep understanding that’s necessary to write a program that really exploit’s that understanding to create something
incredibly valuable to the customer So one of the things we thought about
when we hired Neil was how quickly could he add the team and we have this concept called Zero to net-positive which is how long does it take between when he starts where he’s basically adding nothing to the team but still being paid a salary through to the time where he is adding value, where we can deploy him onto a client projec and bill him out. And we started thinking if this takes three months or less them we’re winning
and it took pretty much about three months I’d come across Makers Academy once or twice before we started talking to Neil, and when I first heard about Makers Academy I’d been reasonably skeptical… You know, I’ve seen many people come and learn how to
develop over the years and the idea that someone can learn in 3 months from an almost standing start sounded too good to be true and then in the time since then I’ve heard more and more good things about Makers Academy from and more different sources and the name that has been built up around it’s really quite impressive
