Welcome to the Code Jam 2019 World Finals

Welcome to the Code Jam 2019 World Finals

[MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER: In the last 16 years
since Code Jam launched, Google’s obviously
grown quite a bit. The competition has also grown. Google San Francisco is
our third-largest office globally with more than 5,000
Google employees working on everything from
apps, to Search, to Chrome, to Cloud,
everything in between. Well, it’s a city, for me, that
is welcoming and accepting. And I hope that all
of our finalists today feel very welcome
here in San Francisco. IAN TULLIS: I’m Ian Tullis. I’m a software
engineer at Google. It’s kind of a dream job. I get to do puzzles
for a living. So this year’s Code
Jam, in particular, has been the largest
one we’ve had. SPEAKER: 74,000 registrants
from 137 countries, year by all accounts. IAN TULLIS: We have
our top 25 finalists who have made it
through a grueling series of online rounds. And they’re here on
site in San Francisco to solve some of the most
fiendish algorithmic puzzles, all designed by Google
engineers, such as myself. SPEAKER: Google Code Jam
really embodies so many of Google’s core tenets. It’s a thriving
community of developers that are really all about
supporting each other, learning from each other,
pushing each other, and, ultimately,
getting together to solve some of the
biggest problems out there. IAN TULLIS: It’s hard enough
to solve these problems. But then you also have to
think, like, what can I solve? What can I solve that the
other contestants can’t solve? Keep an eye on the scoreboard,
like what is our champion currently working on? SPEAKER: What we’ll see
today is a group of folks who not only are part of
the 74,000 who signed up but who had the drive and
the commitment to keep going, and keep pushing
themselves, and supporting each other throughout
multiple qualifying rounds. IAN TULLIS: It’s just great
to see so many contestants just kind of engaging
with these problems and popping up on
the scoreboard. We have 25 contestants. All of them are on
equal footing now. Anybody could win. SPEAKER: We are so delighted
to have you here today. And I wish the best of luck
to all of our competitors. [MUSIC PLAYING]
