“Don’t Learn to Code” and Other Crap Programmers Tell You

You shouldn’t learn how to code if
you’re not passionate! I thought… I thought we were doing the opposite of that for… I was being sarcastic. Ooh Mr. Sarcastic over here. I don’t care.
*inaudible mumbles* So there’s a lot of articles and videos online saying that you shouldn’t learn
how to code or program if you’re not passionate about it… …and it’s a complete load of sh*t. Not only is it a complete load of sh*t it’s also potentially harmful. You’ll find tons and tons of articles online written by coders who romanticize
staying up till 3 o’clock in the morning in a frenzy of Funyuns and Mountain Dew
working on a passion project and if you read this as someone who’s trying to
break into the industry you’re considering studying it in college you
could look at that and say oh I’m not that passionate about it therefore I
could never succeed and that’s wrong. Are you passionate about coding?
You don’t get a hard-on writing Ansible modules? It’s not that passion is bad – passion is
absolutely an asset to have. However passion can be fleeting. There are a lot
of days where you come home from work as a software engineer and the last thing
on your mind is sitting down to write more code. It’s ridiculous that people
expect you to do that. All these employers are looking at your Github profile; they expect you to make all of these tons of contributions to
open-source projects and it’s just like… I got family! I got friends I want to spend
time with! I don’t, like… I code all day at work I don’t want to come home
and do more code! Yes and it leads to a very toxic environment…
it’s so competitive that people will think, “Oh no, I went to karaoke on Thursday.
Now I can’t be a coder.” And this expected level of passion is unique to this particular
field. I couldn’t imagine you go to a plumbing
interview and they asked to see your “Sh*thub” account. *laughing* Show me the toile- *wheezes* *more laughing* “Sh*thub” You gotta sh*t push. You shouldn’t be judged by what you
do outside of work you should be judged by what you do eight hours a day and if
that output matches your peers then why would it need to be your one true
passion? Why would you need to have a muse? So if you’re relatively new to the
field or if you’re interested in studying it do not be alarmed if you
don’t find yourself waking up in the middle of the night just in cold
sweats because you’re not programming Like, I feel like people are trying so
hard to be so like tribalistic and exceptional with the people they’re
associated with. Okay, they’re just like, “Oh, I’m a coder because I’m better than you.”
“I’m smarter than you.” “I’m a software engineer.”
“Look at my laptop stickers!” That’s like a classic programming or coder thing it’s like
people walking around with t-shirts and having stickers of their favorite tools
and like and languages represented. It’s like do you think plumbers walk around
with like Kohler t-shirts or something like that that’s weird it is so freakin
weird. Do you ever go to plumber meetups or anything like that? We decided to look up and see if there were actually any plumber meetups and if
you overlook the real estate agents that are trying to refurbish their bathrooms
then you’ll find one. You’ll find one in Saskatoon Saskatchewan that has 13 members.
There’s 13 dudes in an entire country that care about flushing sh*t. Man we’re really
dumping on plumbers today… Oh, I guess they’re used to it… If any profession can handl-
STOP. Someone did us the favor of writing an article that’s completely contrary to
everything we’ve been saying so now we can pull it up online and mock it openly. 7 bad habits of highly ineffective software engineers written by someone
who’s probably an ineffective software engineer because they wrote this on the
job Number One: lacks passion. People who
enjoy their jobs never do a day of work in their lives. Look, whenever someone
says “passion” I think like this is what I live for, ok?
This is it. It defines you. It’s your purpose it’s what you want to do in life
sitting down at a computer all day and writing code all day is not what most of
us want to do with our lives *clicking noises* Print. I’m passionate about one thing and it’s insulting plumbers on YouTube videos. That’s really sad. If someone isn’t passionate about coding we don’t do them any favors by encouraging them
to pursue it as a career anyway. They probably have subjects they
are passionate about. They should pursue those. They will be happier, and I think
more successful. Oh come on that’s like the wishy-washy crap that we as
Millennials were taught as kids. “You can be anything you want.”
“You can pursue whatever passions you want.” “Do what you love.” I’m sorry but people who are
passionate about knitting aren’t gonna make that much money. We pursue different
professions because they they pay well and that then that’s you know software
is not an exception. I love sleeping. No one other than the Tooth Fairy has ever paid me for that. I actually think that some mattress companies have bed testers
they pay to test out the beds. Consider this my two weeks notice. The take away
from this is not that passion is bad the passion is fantastic and if you have
it bottle it. Harness it. It’s lightning and it’s amazing. However if you can do this
for eight hours a day and you don’t have a problem having a
challenging career then you can absolutely do this do not let this lack
of passion stop you from pursu- bleh leh We can do one of those hard YouTube cuts right? *bip* It’s what everyone f*cking does because no one gives a sh*t. If you are not passionate do not let any
of these articles stop you don’t let any of your peers in college or in the
workplace stop you when they tell you about their heroic exploits of ignoring
their family and coding Yeah also don’t let your, you know, really smart friends who keep talking about all this really difficult crap scare you off from the
profession either okay. I’m sorry. All of this stuff can be learned okay I don’t
think people realize this and that is that most all your data structures all
these algorithms how to think how to break a big problem down into smaller
problems and solve it all of these things can be taught they can be learned
and yes some people have more of an aptitude for it than others it does not
mean the people who aren’t geniuses cannot be successful software engineers
that’s pretty much the takeaway if you’re watching this it’s highly likely
that you’re interested in starting to code just start just do it and even if
you’re not passionate set aside time each day and make it a part of your
routine are you passionate about brushing your teeth do you just pump
your fists in the air when you go and put your shoes on no you do it
because you have to do it and if you want to be in this field because you’ve
done your research and you figure that it has great benefits then just set time
aside to do it and then you can enter the field successfully yeah you can
learn you can take courses you can go to school for it for four years whatever
your choice of action is all it takes is consistent learning and dedication and
discipline you don’t need to you know get wet about Golang. But we can. Can we wrap this up cuz I really just gotta get back to writing this code because I like
it more than everyone and I should be the only coder and no one’s as good at me
as loving how to code You wanna learn how to code? Just do it. Basically. Okay. That’s the morale of the five minutes. You could’ve just skipped to the end. If you like our videos and
you think that we’re interesting then you should subscribe to our channel
we will upload a new video talking about how you can get started with programming
at some point stay tuned even if you’re not passionate about
following our videos you should do it also. I am passionate about our videos. I hope so cuz you got a lot of editing. Ah f*ck. thanks for watching make sure you like
and subscribe and share our videos if you like what we have to say. The most advanced I get with plumbing is using a plunger to shove more sh*t down the toilet that I shouldn’t be The most involved I get is sh*tting and
having it clog and I cry.
